Quick Answer

YSG is an archer commander whose expertise changes his active from a fan into a circular area attack. That shape is a large part of his value for field damage and suitable barbarian chaining. An expertised copy you already own can remain useful; that does not make him the automatic first legendary for every new account.

Before investing, compare when he is available in your season, the partner you will use and the cost of reaching the skill state your plan needs. A chaining plan built around the expertise circle is not delivered by merely unlocking him.

What the Skills Give You

His active damages several targets, his normal attacks can trigger rage and archer-attack benefits, and his later skill adds skill-damage value. He also has a garrison-specific passive. Those effects have different conditions: using him in the field does not activate every line in the kit.

The YSG skill reference documents the fan-shaped base active and circular expertise. Do not treat every target in an area attack as receiving the same damage as an isolated target; multi-target reductions are part of the skill's rules.

Early Pairings and Later Owned Value

Primary → secondary When it can be useful What you give up
Sun Tzu → YSG An early owned area-damage pairing with a developed epic lead Infantry and archer-specific effects do not all benefit the same troop composition
Charles Martel → YSG An established defensive lead protecting the damage secondary It is an older pairing, not a reason to start both legendaries now
Boudica Prime → YSG An archer bridge when both commanders already have usable skills Compare a future archer replacement before adding more resources to the bridge

Choose the troop composition deliberately. “Mixed” is not a free way to receive every infantry and archer bonus at once. Read which units each skill affects, then equip the primary for the march you actually send.

Talent Priorities

When YSG leads, useful Skill-tree rage and active-damage support deserve comparison with Archer-tree bonuses. When he is secondary, his talent allocation contributes nothing to the march: build the lead's tree and put the equipment there.

This guide does not supply a complete verified talent route. Naming Feral Nature, Clarity and several Archer talents is not enough to prove that their ranks and connecting nodes fit your available points. Check a full allocation in the client before spending a reset.

For garrison work, do not assume area damage makes your city safe. A rally is one army for targeting purposes, and defending a city can cause permanent losses. Follow your alliance's nominated garrison plan instead of treating an old YSG build as protection against any attack.

Barbarian Chaining

An expertised YSG can supply the circular area attack behind a sustainable primary. The goal is to catch additional nearby barbarians with area damage while managing the original fight. Target spacing, the primary's sustain and the damage you deal determine whether the chain remains manageable.

Learn with natural AP and a small pull. If the march routes or kills the anchor before the next pull is ready, adjust the target level or composition. See AP and barbarian chaining for the operating routine. Owning the circle does not make every pull free or safe.

Should You Start Him Now?

For an owned expertise, find useful jobs before shelving him. For a fresh project, compare the complete alternative march and the seasons in which you can use it. Do not spend simply because an older guide says YSG must precede every Prime.

Use the investment guide and Zhuge Liang comparison to separate existing value from the next purchase.

FAQ

Does YSG need expertise for the circular attack?

Yes. The base active is a fan; the circular version is the expertise effect.

Is YSG always the best first legendary?

No. Availability, the intended pair and the cost of a usable skill state decide whether he fits your account.

Does putting him in secondary waste his damage?

No. His unlocked skills still contribute. The primary's talents and equipment are the ones that apply.
