Rarity

Legendary — the strongest ceilings and the scarcest sculptures. Expensive to max, dominant when maxed.

Levels and XP

Skills

Every commander has four skills, each upgraded with sculptures to a maximum of level 5. Epic and legendary commanders then unlock a fifth expertise skill once all four reach 5 — which is what "maxed" actually means at the top end, and why 5/5/5/5 is a project rather than a milestone.

Those numbers are the whole reason the epic-first strategy works: 440 is achievable for a free player in a season, 690 is not.

The rule that matters: finish the first skill of your primary commander before touching anyone else. The jump from 1/1/1/1 to 5/1/1/1 on a strong first skill is usually worth more than levelling a second commander from scratch.

Talents

Each commander has three talent trees, drawn from a pool of fifteen, and earns talent points with levels. Talents are permanent stat and effect bonuses, and only the primary commander's talents apply to a march. Full detail in the talent trees guide.

Prime commanders

Some commanders have upgraded Prime versions. A Prime is a separate commander built from scratch, with its own sculptures, not an upgrade to the one you already own — and that misunderstanding is expensive. Pairing

Choosing Your First Commanders

You need four jobs covered, roughly in this order:

A barbarian farmer. Converts action points into commander XP and materials, and carries your fort rallies. Peacekeeping-talented commanders do this best.

A garrison commander to defend your city and alliance flags.

One commander can hold two jobs early. Do not try to cover all four with four separate half-built commanders.

The Mistakes That Cost Months

Spreading sculptures. The number one account-killer. Five commanders at skill level 2 is strictly worse than one at 5.
Building for the wrong troop type. Your civilization bonus, your best commanders and your researched troop tier should all point the same direction. See best civilization.
Ignoring epics because they aren't legendary. A finished epic pair carries you through the entire early and mid game.
Levelling a commander you will not use. Commander XP is a real resource. Spend it deliberately.
Resetting on impulse. Talent resets cost items; skill investment is not refundable in the same way. Decide before you commit.
