The logic: more rage means more Art of War casts, and Art of War is where all his damage lives. Raw stat nodes are worth less to him than anything that makes him cast again.

Infantry + Skill hybrid

The most popular general-purpose build. Take the Skill nodes that drive rage, then head toward Elite Soldiers in the Infantry tree for survivability — but only invest lightly there. Two points is often enough; over-investing in Infantry buys durability he does not need if he is casting on schedule.

Garrison build

Max the Garrison tree first, then spend leftovers in Infantry. Worth doing only if Sun Tzu is genuinely your city defender — most accounts eventually find a better one, and this build wastes what makes him special.

First skill first, always. Art of War is the entire commander; everything else is support. Take it to 5 before touching the others, which is the general rule for any commander you are building.

Yi Seong-Gye (YSG) — the standard, and especially strong through KvK 1. YSG boosts skill damage and works cleanly in the secondary slot behind Sun Tzu.
Bai Qi — high damage with area effect, which stacks well with Art of War hitting multiple targets.
William Wallace — his kit is built to make a nuker like Sun Tzu land harder.
