Crystals and the Two Buildings

When you enter the Lost Kingdom map you gain two buildings:

The Crystal Mine — produces crystals.
The Crystal Technology Centre — spends them on research.

Crystals are a season-only resource. They do not carry over. That has two consequences: there is no reason to finish a season holding crystals, and there is no way to bank them in advance.

What you can bank in advance is speedups, which is why the pre-season matters so much.

What Crystal Technology Gives You

The tree covers the things that decide fights and map presence:

Researching also generates Season Coins, spent in the Season of Conquest store — so the tech tree pays twice, once in stats and once in a currency. The Speedup Rule

The most useful single piece of SoC advice, and it is unintuitive:

For roughly the first 10 days, every speedup goes into levelling the Crystal Mine.
After that, every speedup goes into the Crystal Research Centre.

The logic is compounding. The mine determines your crystal income for the rest of the season, so the earlier it is levelled the more total crystals you generate. Rushing research first with an under-levelled mine feels productive and costs you crystals for weeks.

Which Technologies First

The honest answer is that the priority depends on what you are doing in the season, and the tree has been reorganised across updates:

If your kingdom is fighting, prioritise the war branches once the mine is levelled — march speed and combat stats compound across every rally you join.
If you are not fighting yet, continue on economic technology, which increases crystal throughput and funds the war tech later.

The 30-Day Pre-Season

This is the part that decides your season. Before the map opens:

Hoard speedups, especially research. All of them. This is not the moment for a scoring event.
Convert resources into items so nothing is loot-able — see KvK 1 preparation.
Get your troop tier sorted. T4 minimum; T5 if the research chain is close.
Finish a commander pair rather than starting three — see best commander pairs.

The Season Stories

Season of Conquest runs as named story modes, with a selection offered each registration window. Confirmed names include Strife of the Eight, Heroic Anthem, March of the Ages and Desert Conquest. They differ in map, objectives and how the season is scored, and kingdoms register for one rather than playing them all.
