Quick Answer

March queues determine how many separate armies you can dispatch. Troop capacity determines how many units a particular army can carry. Rally capacity is another limit again. Upgrading one does not necessarily increase the others.

When the number on the dispatch screen changes, compare commander levels/skills, City Hall, active buffs and the current mode before assuming troops are missing.

March Queue Unlocks

City Hall milestone Ordinary march queues available
Starting account 1
Level 5 2
Level 11 3
Level 17 4
Level 22 5

These unlocks are documented in the capacity and queue reference. Special-mode rules and seasonal extra-march systems are separate from this basic City Hall progression.

An extra queue helps gathering only if you can fill it with a suitable commander and troops and keep it working. It does not double the speed of an army already gathering. The improvement comes from doing more jobs simultaneously.

Why March Capacity Changes

Your dispatch limit can depend on City Hall, commander progression, applicable capacity skills and active account/event bonuses. Expansion items and relevant seasonal technology add further conditions. Check both commanders' unlocked skills where a capacity effect applies, while remembering that only the primary's talents are used.

Do not add together every displayed troop number from two commander screens and assume the result is the dispatch limit. Use the actual pairing and mode to verify the army size before consuming an expansion.

A Capacity Check That Finds the Cause

Step What to compare
Same pair Did you change primary, secondary, stars or levels?
Same skills Did the new partner remove an applicable capacity skill?
Same buffs Has an expansion or temporary bonus expired?
Same location/mode Are seasonal or event rules different?
Same task Is this ordinary dispatch, joining a rally or a special battle?

Change one thing at a time. If capacity fell after changing the secondary, inspect that secondary's skill contribution before blaming the primary's talent reset.

Capacity Versus Troops You Should Send

The maximum is not always the requested amount. A fort rally may deliberately leave space for more members, and a combat rally may require a precise troop type. Follow the rally lead's instructions instead of automatically filling every available slot.

For field combat, a larger march also exposes more troops. Use capacity as part of a complete fighting and healing plan. A 50% expansion does not guarantee a better trade if it encourages the account to take a fight it cannot afford.

Special Modes Need Their Own Rules

Sunset Canyon does not simply copy your ordinary field dispatch. Its simulated armies and commander-based rules need to be read inside Canyon. Likewise, rally limits and garrison reinforcement space are not ordinary march capacity with a different label.

See the Canyon guide for positioning and the Castle guide for rally progression. Keep the numbers from those systems separate when planning an upgrade.

Should I rush City Hall 22 for gathering?

The fifth ordinary queue is a meaningful milestone, but its value depends on completing the prerequisite chain and having troops/commanders to use it. Plan it alongside research and your resource budget instead of emptying every speedup without a follow-up plan.
