Part of the Mechanics Series:

Quick Answer

Your home kingdom map has three zone types: six Zone 1 areas (the safe starting ring), three Zone 2 areas, and one Zone 3 in the centre containing the Lost Temple. Difficulty rises as you move inward. Runes come in five tiers and spawn near holy sites — you take them by killing the guardians defending the site, and the strongest runes sit in the middle near the Lost Temple. Holy sites held by an alliance give permanent buffs to every member.

The Three Zones

Zone Count What it is
Zone 1 6 per kingdom The outer starting ring. Low-level barbarians, safe gathering, where new accounts belong.
Zone 2 3 per kingdom The middle band. Tougher content, more contested.
Zone 3 1 per kingdom The centre, containing the Lost Temple. The most valuable and most fought-over ground.

The design is a difficulty gradient from the edge inward. If your commanders and research cannot clear high-level barbarians and forts yet, you belong in Zone 1 — there is no prize for moving in early and being farmed.

Holy Sites and Their Buffs

Holy sites are capturable structures that grant permanent buffs to every member of the alliance holding them. That is what makes them worth a scheduled rally: one capture benefits a hundred people continuously.

The Zone 1 sanctums are the ones most players meet first:

Sanctum Buff
Sanctum of Courage Commander experience +10%
Sanctum of Wind March speed +5%
Sanctum of Blood Troop health +2%
Sanctum of Hope Gathering speed +5%

Small individually, permanent and stacked across an alliance. The Sanctum of Courage is quietly excellent for any alliance levelling commanders — see how to level up commanders fast.

Deeper zones hold larger structures, and the KvK Lost Kingdom map has an entirely separate and much longer list.

Runes

Runes are temporary buffs picked up from the map, in five tiers of increasing strength.

How to get them: runes spawn near holy sites, and you take them by killing the guardians protecting the site. The strongest ones are near the Lost Temple in Zone 3, guarded by the toughest guardians on the home map.

How to use them well:

  • Grab them with a fast commander. Runes go to whoever arrives first, which is exactly why Cao Cao's mobility build exists — he is the fastest commander in the game and this is one of his main jobs.
  • Time them. A rune buff is temporary, so picking one up right before a rally or a gathering push is worth far more than grabbing it idly.
  • Stack them. Runes stack with kingdom titles and alliance buffs — the combination is how experienced governors get outsized results from one action.

Guardian kills also feed commander XP, so rune runs are not wasted time even when someone else takes the rune.

Reading the Map Practically

  • Stay in Zone 1 until your commanders can handle Zone 2. Ambition gets accounts farmed.
  • Gather inside alliance territory for +25% and safety.
  • Use markers to coordinate rally points with your alliance — describing coordinates in chat wastes minutes you do not have.
  • Watch where your alliance's border sits. Territory adjacency determines which objectives you can even attempt.
